Students trade at business market

Students trade at business market

Posted: 3rd July 2019

Budding young businessmen and women launched their own companies at a community market.

Year 10 students at Epping St John’s Church of England School set up their own businesses to trade at Epping Market.

The business students went through a Dragons’ Den style process to pitch their ideas to a panel of teachers and ask for a budget of up to £100.

Ideas included artificial flowers, makeup, electrical items and photo frames.

The successful teams have traded at the Monday market over a period of five weeks.

Sahbi Benzid, deputy headteacher, said: “Students have had to work out their pricing structure, produce marketing posters and establish how to show their products on the market stall.

“This is all about giving students an opportunity to learn about business by experiencing it for themselves. They are learning about setting up a business, understanding pricing and communicating with customers.

“This is the first time we have taken on a market stall for our students. The manager of the market has been mentoring our students and supporting them through the experience.

“It has been a huge success.”

Market manager Mike Allen said: “It has been a pleasure having students on the market. We are keen to have more schools follow Epping’s lead; they can learn a lot. Marks and Spencer’s started there and this could continue and develop.”

Student Lauren Curtis said: “I have enjoyed being able to come up with our business, deciding on products to sell and working in a team.”

Nancy Pierson said: “It’s good to show that we are able to organise a stall and be responsible.”
